Meet the Artist
I was born in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands, in the 60s just after Nelson Mandela was captured near our family’s dairy farm. For some reason, the Dargle Valley is a creator of creative people, and I am lucky enough to be one of the products of this area.
It was during my studies at the Natal Technikon in the 80s that I realised that you could have a career in the art world. There were many options, from journalism to graphic art, fine art, and jewellery design; the choice was endless. I was dying to do something like this, but continued the boring way forward, studying as a Production Manager with a bursary from Coronation brickworks in Pietermaritzburg.
I married my wife Wendy in ‘86, and we have two gorgeous adult children. Wendy taught, and I ran a busy estate agency in Hilton. There was very little time for art, but, boy, did I need to use my creative mind for cash flow, being ahead of the opposition, and keeping all the bills paid.
My art career started on a family holiday to Knysna, where I attended a course with well-respected commercial artist Dale Elliot.
With the odd break and many mentors, I have slowly built my own style. My favourite spot is my studio set in a quiet cul de sac in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal. The rolling hills, cattle in neighbouring pastures, a rumble from a farm tractor and the fresh smell of cow dung are certainly what I call home.

I use only the three primary colours and white to mix all my own colours. I find it easier to get the correct shades when mixing from scratch, and it also gives harmony to a picture as the base tones are the same. The trick is not to turn it into mud, which can happen quickly if you’re not careful!
Did you attend art school?
I don’t have any formal training, but I work very closely with a few mentors who keep me inspired and on the right track.
What medium do you use?
Acrylic, oils, and watercolour.
Can you paint my pet?
Yes… BUT I don’t think you would recognise it or like it!

I love doing commissions, provided you want something impressionist or abstract. Please get in touch to chat about your idea.
